Understanding your admission status (Engineering at Galveston)

Posted on 06/13/2022 02:29 PM
Texas A&M University is known for its great engineering programs, including Engineering at Galveston. And now you’ve joined the latest cohort of talented Aggies — congrats on your admission! Get excited to study on the Gulf Coast! Here’s a breakdown to help you better understand your admission status.

About the program
In the College of Engineering at Galveston program, all students follow a general engineering curriculum the first 2-3 semesters, which allows them to explore all 22 degree options. Then they use the Entry to a Major (ETAM) process to transition from general engineering into degree-granting major.

The ETAM process uses a priority method that places you in your highest ranked major possible based on your academic performance and the program’s capacity. After completing required courses for entering a major, you’re guaranteed a spot in your first-choice major if you maintain the required cumulative GPA defined for your class. During each ETAM cycle, all engineering majors accept applications and applicants can apply to 3-5 majors. Applicants should carefully rank their major choices because they won’t be able to decline an offer to a major listed on their application. Once accepted into a major, students move to the location where that major is offered.

General engineering students will have the option of continuing their degree at the Galveston location or transferring to our College Station location. Our Galveston location currently offers the following degree options: Ocean Engineering, Multidisciplinary Engineering Technology, Computer Science and Interdisciplinary Engineering.

How to confirm your admission

First thing first, accept your admission by registering for a New Student Conference (NSC). At your NSC, you’ll register for classes, tour campus, meet Texas A&M University at Galveston campus faculty and staff and much more. You can register for your NSC through the Applicant Information System (AIS) on the Applicant tab at howdy.tamu.edu. Once you are logged in to AIS, go to the My App Status tab, click on My Next Steps and follow the steps to register.

After completing registration for your conference, an NSC Confirmation Page will appear on the screen, and an electronic notification will be sent to an email address you provided during the registration process. If you don’t receive this email, you didn’t successfully register.

In addition to the NSC, you should sign up for a tour and info session. It’s also important to note that you must take your Math Placement Exam (MPE) before your NSC. This online exam will be administered in a proctored setting via Zoom and will determine which math course you are placed in for your first semester at Texas A&M. Once the exam registration is open, availability is on a first-come, first-serve basis. Practice exams can be accessed through the Howdy portal. More info about the exam can be found here.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact advisors and staff at galvestonengineers@tamu.edu. You can also contact program director Jay Porter at jporter@tamu.edu or academic advisors Andie Beer at andie.beer@tamu.edu and Anna Budvitis at atprim2@tamu.edu.

Although you’ll be in Galveston, you’re still 100% Aggie! You’ll get all the perks including the coveted Aggie Ring, membership to the ever-growing Aggie Network, access to Jobs4Aggies and Texas A&M proudly printed on your diploma. Aggie students on the Galveston campus also have access to a wide variety of programs and associations, resources and services.
